Silverton School EL Education
Connecting Classrooms to Community
Silverton Public School follows an EL Education academic model that connects students to the world beyond the classroom through meaningful fieldwork, collaboration with experts, and service learning. Students actively engage with their communities, using local natural and social settings as extensions of the classroom for purposeful fieldwork tied to their academic studies. By collaborating with professional experts and community members, students ensure that their work is accurate, relevant, and of high quality.
We believe in the power of experiential learning.
Expeditions based on state curriculum standards provide a focused framework for study, integrating real-world experiences into the learning process. For example, students have explored topics like the water cycle, the history of U.S. education, Africa, the 20th Century, and the food cycle. In 2023-2024, the middle school undertook a year-long expedition on War and the Role of the Military, culminating in a field trip to Louisiana and Oklahoma to witness a Civil War reenactment and visit War Memorials. These field trips, alongside others, bring a depth of understanding that classroom learning alone cannot achieve, especially given the small and isolated nature of the Silverton community.
Silverton Public School is also committed to embracing diversity as an asset for learning within the classroom and the broader school community. The school has established structures that ensure high levels of achievement for all students, particularly those from historically underserved groups, and believes in the capacity of every student to succeed.
