Our School's Story
Silverton School is a truly unique institution, set in a mountain valley at 9,318 feet, surrounded by the rugged beauty and history of a former mining town. The town’s Victorian architecture stands alongside modern elements like our greenhouse and community garden, reflecting a blend of past and present. Our school serves around 80 students, supported by 15 teachers and 10 staff members who are deeply committed to providing an authentic, caring, and supportive educational experience.
Rooted in History, Growing with Purpose.
The school’s journey hasn’t always been easy. After the mines closed in the early 1990s, Silverton School’s population dwindled, and by the early 2000s, enrollment had dropped to fewer than 50 students. The school’s physical and educational environment began to deteriorate, leading to disengagement from students, teachers, and the broader community. Recognizing the need for change, the community came together in 2002 to chart a new course, viewing the school’s small size and mountain location as strengths rather than drawbacks.
Embracing the principles of EL Education, Silverton School embarked on a comprehensive reform effort, transforming both its mindset and practices. This journey of renewal culminated in the restoration of our school building between 2010-2012, equipping it for 21st-century learning. Today, Silverton School is a place of growth and possibility, where the unique setting, strong character, and rich history come together to create a magical environment for students and educators alike.

Our Town's History
Silverton, nestled on the southern edge of an ancient volcanic caldera, boasts a rich geological and historical legacy. Formed 27-28 million years ago during the San Juan volcanic era, the region's rugged landscape was shaped by faulting, folding, and glaciation. Along these faults, mineral-laden waters deposited valuable metals, leading to a booming mining industry. Established in 1874 during the gold rush, Silverton quickly flourished, its economy driven by mining and the promise of fortune. Today, Silverton's historic charm endures, attracting over 300,000 tourists annually via the train tracks that once served as the town's vital link to the outside world.
Despite its remote location and the hardships faced after the mines closed in the early 1990s, Silverton has persevered. With a year-round population of 800, the town has embraced its stunning natural beauty and historical significance. Hikers, bikers, skiers, and history enthusiasts are drawn to Silverton's unique landscape and vibrant community. The town's future looks bright as new families discover the quality of life and the sense of community that Silverton offers, making it one of Colorado's most family-friendly and picturesque towns.
